National Science Olympiads

The National Science Olympiads have provided education opportunities to young people for the last 29 years.

General Information

The 2202 Science Olympiads Program is run by the Competitions Team within the TÜBİTAK Scientist Assistance Programmes Directorate (BİDEB).

TÜBİTAK conducts the Science Olympiads process in three categories, as national, international and regional science olympiads, in ways that correspond with each other.

The TÜBİTAK 2202 - Science Olympiads programme aims to cultivate middle school and high school students’ interest in the basic and computer sciences, and to guide students’ studies in this direction. To this end, it organizes the Science Olympiads every year, in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Middle School Mathematics and Middle School Computer Science categories. Students who succeed in the Science Olympiads are selected and trained in Computer Science, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Middle School School Mathematics and Middle School Computer Science categories, in order to represent our country in Regional and International Olympiads held every year.

We began participating in international olympiads in 1973, and this has become a national programme since 1993. A two-stage exam system has been organized in Computer Science, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics categories for the past 29 years. In 1996, Middle School Mathematics was added to the process, and well as Middle School Computer Science in 2017. The total number of exam categories has increased to seven. As of 2021, the Science Olympiads is in its 29th year.

Students who succeed in the First Stage Exam will attend the Summer School to prepare for the Second Stage Exam. They will be trained by academics well-regarded in their fields.

The summer school (between August-September) lasts for two weeks, and immediately afterwards, should the Committee Chairs request, students will be invited to a one-week November Camp held in November.

Second Stage Exam

There are no direct applications for the Science Olympiad Second Stage Exam. Students who succeed in the First Stage Exam are called to the Second Stage Exam. The Second Stage Exam may be written and/or practical. Second Stage Exam questions are prepared by the Olympiad Committee authorized by TÜBİTAK.

This is evaluated by the GYK and finalized after the approval of the Department.

Teams selected at the end of the Team Selection Exams are taken to short-term team camps on the dates determined by the Olympiad Committees until the Olympiad takes place. In these camps, students take theoretical and/or practical lessons from academics who are experts in their fields. These camps are more elaborate than the Winter School.

All activities to train students for the programme are carried out by the Olympiad Committees in coordination with BİDEB.
